Part I: Cut Charging Time for Cell Phone BatteriesCut the time to charge your cell phone from 5 hours to 10 minutes. A new technology developed by the Department of Energy (DoE) and Vorbeck Materials not only drastically reduces the time it takes to charge a cell phone battery, but also improves the power and cycling stability of lithium ion batteries, while maintaining a high energy storage capacity. The new material, known as Vor-x, was initially developed at Princeton University. Vorbeck Materials is already marketing the new technology, and has signed a deal with materials distribution and supply company Targray Technology International. The DoE is enthusiastic about the new technology and Vorbeck Materials. "Vorbeck produces a very high quality graphene and they have demonstrated an ability to get products successfully to market," said Gordon Graff, project manager at the DoE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).More good news! Not only will it cut the time to charge a cell phone battery, but on a more global application, it will also cut the charge time of electric vehicle batteries and extend the driving time. I'm more excited about this outcome of the development than the cell phone batteries. Wonder how long it will be before we see the impact of being able to have long distance electric vehicles. The ramifications of this technology could truly be revolutionary!Part II: Kinetic charger keeps your cell phone charged while you walkA new kinetic device uses your body movement to charge your cell phone. While the concept is not new, the latest design clips to your shoe, making it comfortable and unobtrusive. Using a USB connector cable, you can charge your iPod, cell phone and other hand held devices. I'm not sure how convenient the USB cable connected to your foot is going to be, but it's a cool concept. Being able to use it as a spare battery charger would be more appealing to me. Of course that would preclude iPods and iPhone users, since those devices don't have removable batteries.Imagine charging your device while jogging on the tread mill at the gym. I get a funny visual in my head of the multi-device jogger with several USB cables running down to the shoes. Hmmm...
