Samsung seem to be intent on flooding the market with touchscreen phones and here we have yet another - the Omnia LITE B3700.

Essentially a cut-down version of the Omnia 2 , the Omnia LITE still offers a decent range of smart phone features.

As a mid range Windows phone, the Omnia LITE sits in the same price bracket as the LG GM750 andSony Ericsson Satio , but is distinguished from them as being a decidedly straight laced option.

The question is can a Windows smart phone still compete at a time when mobile manufacturers are coming up with hot operating systems like Apple's oft-duplicated OS, as well as fresh offerings from Palm and Nokia?

We gave it a thorough testing to find out



Design and Specification

From the outside the Omnia LITE's pared back for m might be a little conservative for some tastes, but combined with the high build quality that we've come to expect from Samsung, this handset does have an air of class.

Besides, looks aren't everything and with a 667 Mhz brain the Omnia LITE is a fairly sharp smart phone. The B3700 runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 (upgradeable to 6.5) so you get a full complement of Microsoft Office applications from Word to Powerpoint, all promising to make working on the move that much easier.

The Omnia LITE also boasts a large bright 3" TFT resistive touch screen (which is supposed to be less sensitive, but more accurate than a capacitive screen) and a stylus is bundled for operation.
Wait, what? A stylus?

To be fair, some applications on the Omnia LITE (Excel especially) require pin-point precision. But since the screen isn't fun with fingers, you end up having to use the stylus for everything. Intuitive, this is not.

Nice to see a micro USB port though- these are increasingly becoming the standard connection for charging mobile phones.

That said, the battery life on the Omnia LITE is decent, managing four days with occasional internet use and email.

Connectivity

The Omnia LITE has HSDPA enabled 3G (read as 3.5G) and Wi-Fi, so even if you're not in a hotspot, getting on the internet isn't too hard.

Meanwhile push email makes getting your messages and downloading attachments a cinch.

The LITE also comes with a variety of widgets - everything from Facebook, Youtube, and MSN to stock market apps - so you can get up and running as soon as you get it out of the box and everythi ng is nicely optimized using the Opera browser.

Bluetooth v.2.0 then makes wireless transfers a doddle and connections are nicely visualized.

Media

On board the B7300 packs a decent 3.15 megpaixel camera. Now we've heard a couple of moans about this one, but we found the results to be great (see below)!

Remember: Megapixels don't equal quality, so just because it's 'only' 3 megapixels, it doesn't detract from the fact that the OmniaLITE's camera takes more than decent pictures.
It also boasts a panoramic mode - great for breathtaking holiday snaps. Or in this case, the view from the office window...



Crucially, there is no flash so no night time party snaps with the OmniaLITE, neither is there a 3.5mm jack - so you'll just have to make do with the proprietary headphones.

Verdict:

After about a week we were just about beginning to enjoy using the Omnia LITE - making calls was fine, e mails were coming through quickly, browsing was fair and we were taking some nice snaps.
But then Windows started being well, Windows, and so we were suddenly reminded why so many people jumped ship. Erratic performance, unexplained crashes and error messages abound, and we began to reassess our opinion of the handset...
On paper the Omnia LITE offers decent connectivity, organizational tools and classical looks, but whilst the LITE's features and performance have been pared down, this doesn't seem to be reflected in the price: we found Omnia 2 deals for significantly less.

This week Apple gave the world an early look at their forthcoming operating system, and tech journalists got their first peek at some of the concepts driving development of Apple's next desktop operating system, dubbed Mac OS X Lion.

Could the company be preparing to bring one of the most frequently demanded features, a fully functional Mac OS, to the iPad?

Our brief glimpse of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion told us one thing: Apple is attempting to bridge the gap between their mobile platform, iOS, and their Mac operating system, Mac OS X. When it arrives next year, Mac OS X 10.7 will bring new several staple features of iOS 4 to Apple's Mac computers, specifically Launchpad, an icon-focused interface that arranges all of your available apps, complete with app folders, just as they would appear on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, on your Mac desktop. Unlike a full iOS interface, however, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion makes the system toggleable, and users will still have access to the dock, desktop, and menus of a full Mac OS

Furthermore, apps designed for Mac OS X 10.7 will feature full screen modes that occupy your entire desktop or laptop screen, much like an iPad app, and will support trackpad gesture controls that could easily be applied to a touchscreen interface.

Primary among those drivers, as Apple chief executive Steve Jobs announced, was bringing to Lion what Apple had learned from its experience with the successful iPad tablet. Like the iPad, Lion will run apps from a similar central app store. A new Launchpad for apps and a Mission Control feature will combine the talents of Spaces, Expos, and Dashboard.

Jobs announced that Lion would emerge in the summer of 2011, but the Mac App Store will open within 90 days. My close friends will tell you that I've a rather eclectic (or perhaps that should be eccentric!) taste in music. I grew up as a young teenager on a diet of hard rock and heavy metal. Then I discovered the beauty and complexity of classical music and fell in love with composers like Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Rachmaninov, etc.

Broadening my tastes even further as young adult I went all retro and spent my time soaking up the likes of the Stones, the Doors, Clapton, etc. Now my tastes have changed even more and my iPod carries a complete mix of everything from indie, pop, dance, house, trance, blues and some very obscure world-music' but my real passion lies with ambient trance and in particular any of the amazing work by Simon Posford, a genius of acoustic/electro ambient psy-trance' no seriously!

So why am I telling you all this? Well, here's an interesting lesson in marketing that I've just been massively impressed by.

Younger Brother, a music project by Mr Posford and Co, are about to cut a new CD but have taken a very different route to market; you might have even become aware of it before. It's called Pledge Music and this is how it works; before the CD is actually recorded the artist asks their followers and fans (their community or tribe' in marketing terms) to pledge what they will commit to buying when the new CD is released. It's a form of pre-selling, if you like.

By asking for fans to pledge their support in advance the artist knows if the new production is going to be a success before they've even created the actual product. Clever, eh?! If the volume of support just isn't there, then they won't go ahead with the recording and it's back to the drawing board (or should that be rehearsal studio?), I guess.

I hope you're really getting the point here; this is how a business perhaps your own can test market a product before it is even created, avoiding the risk of stacking the shelves with something that people perhaps won't want to buy.

Even more than this though, it completely changes the dynamics of how the consumer relates to the vendor. And it's this element that I'm really very excited about; it's a perfect example of a shift in strategy that I'm trying to make business owners more aware of.

Most of us have two phones, our cell and our land line (house phone). Realistically many people are paying two bills when one is sufficient. The cell phone is still more expensive than the house phone but with the massive increase of people signing up in the mobile world prices continue to fall. What should I do?

The evening tends to be the cheapest rate for using your cell phone so you need to average out both bills. There are a number of different aspects to consider when deciding on moving to cell phone only. If you live in a large city the chances are your cell phone reception is as good as your land line but if you live in a more remote region the reception may not be all that clear or consistent.

Look into the different types of cell plans available to maximise the amount of free text and talk time minutes. Check the different cell phone carriers and see what options they are offering. It has never been easier to change from one carrier to another without changing your cell number.

Cell phones services are ever improving. At the moment land line is still a more steady reliable service but this gap is closing fast. People living in major cities will find little to choose from the two services provided from land and cell and the move to cell phone only in made a little easier. For people in more rural areas the decision tends to be more difficult to choose as cell phone coverage may not be as reliable as land line coverage so people have both phones.

Cell phone advantage:

SMS Text is a great way to minimise your spending. If you call a friend or family member on the land line it can be difficult to make the call a quick call without sounding rude. Cell SMS text is ideal fast and a cheap way to arrange a meeting place or pass a brief note and is widely used by most cell phone users.

Land line advantage

Currently the land line phone is cheaper than the cell phone when making calls. The coverage is generally excellent and land line telecom companies are fighting hard by reducing pricing to keep the cell phone companies at bay.
